A strange black and purple looking jellyfish made an appearance on this remotely controlled camera located in the gulf of Mexico. Researchers were controlling the camera when the rare Stygiomedusa gigantea made a playful appearance. It is quite rare to see this deep-sea jellyfish, let alone capture it on camera.

Personally I love things like this. Less than 5% of the oceans have been explored so we have no idea what other beautiful creatures are lurking around down there. I can’t imagine many larger creatures surviving down there that aren’t jellyfish but I hope I am pleasantly (or horrifically) surprised.
